Tiny Desk Live performance : NPR

Regina Spektor sat in her lodge room ready as we tuned the piano behind my desk. In these idle moments, she whipped up a “Tiny Track,” and he or she opens her live performance singing this candy, humorous and tiny ditty. “Took a prepare from New York to D.C. / And everybody was coughing on me,” she sings, “However I wore an actual tight masks / And acquired myself a unfavorable COVID take a look at.” I will not spoil the remaining besides to say that what unfolds over the course of the subsequent 5 songs is the humor and passions I’ve cherished in Regina Spektor’s music since receiving an early launch of her Soviet Kitsch CD in 2004.

Now 18 years later, Regina has made what I imagine is her most astonishing document so far, House, earlier than and after. We hear two songs from this 2022 launch, together with the album’s opening monitor, “Changing into All Alone.” The story has Regina strolling residence alone when she hears God name out her title: “And He stated, ‘Hey, Let’s seize a beer / It is terrible late / We each proper right here,’ ” she sings, “And we did not even should pay / ‘Trigger God is God / And He is revered.” Their dialog ensues, and Spektor wonders simply why life and loneliness do not enhance with time. It is the kind of reality and whimsy that makes for such heartbreaking music, together with previous favorites “Constancy” and “Samson,” carried out right here merely on piano with allure and conviction.
